Marshal GOUVION SR-CYR Laurent

Born in Toul on April 13, 1764 – Died in Hyères on March 10, 1830

 

Nicknamed General “Ten Thousand Men” because of his efficiency, he proved to be a great maneuverer and a fine strategist during the campaigns of the republic.

He distinguished himself in the campaigns of Mainz, Stuttgart, Biberach, Freiburg, then in the Spanish campaign. Stendhal thought he was one of the few military leaders capable of studying a case.
